Microsoft Outlook when used with Exchange server creates OST(Offline Storage Table) file which is stored locally on users\u2019 system and contains the copy of mailbox items. OST file is used when the connection to Exchange Server is not online, then user can work with this OST file and the changes made to OST file during this period are later synchronized with Exchange server once the connection is established.<\/p>\n

Error during OST File Synchronizations<\/strong>
\nWhen the connection to Exchange Server is available MS Outlook tries to synchronize the OST file with Exchange Server mailbox but sometimes due to some unexpected reasons like\u2013abrupt system shutdown or slow connection don\u2019t allow the process to complete. These type of errors may cause OST file to get inaccessible and corrupt.<\/p>\n

Use OST Integrity Check Tool to repair OST file<\/strong>
\nMicrosoft does provide an inbuilt OST Repair tool(scanost.exe) which is also known as OST Integrity Check Tool to repair corruption issues related to OST file. It scans the offline folder thoroughly and compares it with online copy which is stored on server. After scanning the OST file this tool restores the differences in both the files which were caused during synchronization. To run OST Integrity Check Tool follow the steps mentioned below:<\/p>\n

  2. Findexe<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>on location C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office\\Office_version<\/em><\/li>\n

  4. Select the email profile to which OST belongs<\/li>\n
  5. ClickConnect<\/strong>\u00a0when prompted to\u00a0Connect<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0Work Offline<\/strong><\/li>\n
  6. ClickRepair Errors<\/strong>\u00a0to let the tool repair errors in OST file<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Microsoft has discontinued scanost.exe from Outlook 2010 and newer versions of Outlook also scanost.exe is not that efficient on large OST files or when the corruption is high. So if you using MS Outlook 2010 and later versions you must rely on some third party OST Repair Tool to to the task for you.<\/p>\n
